Qualifying for the UK Ancestry Visa
To qualify for an ancestry visa, you need to demonstrate that:
- You are over 17 years old.
- You are a Commonwealth citizen, lawfully resident in a country outside the UK.
- You have the ability and genuine intent to work in the UK, encompassing voluntary work.
- You have adequate funds to support yourself and any dependent family members without relying on public funds.
Additionally, you must prove that one of your grandparents:
- Was born in the UK or Islands (Isle of Man and the Channel Islands).
- Was born before March 31, 1922, in what is now the Republic of Ireland.
- Was born on a British-registered ship or aircraft.
Visa Duration and Extensions
Upon approval, you will receive a visa valid for five years. After this period, you can apply to extend your visa or, if you meet the requirements, apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

Ancestry visa holders are free to work in the UK without restrictions, including self-employment and voluntary work. Additionally, studying in the UK is permitted, subject to certain conditions.
